A dyslexia assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to identify whether a learner has dyslexia. It explores strengths and areas of difficulty using a range of recognised assessments, alongside background information and observations from both home and school. Following the assessment, you will receive a detailed written report explaining the findings, together with practical recommendations for home, school or further education.

Some common signs include persistent difficulties with reading, spelling or writing, despite appropriate teaching. Other indicators may include slow reading, poor spelling, difficulties remembering sequences or instructions, and a family history of dyslexia. An assessment can help identify whether dyslexia is contributing to these difficulties and provide clear recommendations for support.

8+ is the standard age for a full diagnostic assessment. I currently assess those from 8-18 years old.

Assessments usually take around 3 hours to complete, although this may vary depending on the age and need of the child

A diagnostic assessment alone does not automatically entitle a learner to extra time. However, it may provide important evidence that contributes towards decisions about exam access arrangements. Where appropriate, a separate access arrangements assessment can determine eligibility in accordance with current JCQ regulations.

Exam access arrangements are adjustments that help ensure learners with recognised difficulties can demonstrate their knowledge fairly in examinations. Depending on individual needs, these may include extra time, the use of a word processor, supervised rest breaks, a reader, or other approved arrangements in line with current examination regulations.

Yes. I understand that travelling can be difficult for some families, so I am happy to travel to locations across Lancashire, Cumbria and the North West where appropriate. Every learner is different, so tuition is tailored to their individual needs. Following an initial discussion, and where appropriate a review of any previous assessments, I design a personalised programme of support using structured, evidence-informed teaching approaches. Sessions focus on developing literacy skills while building confidence, independence and strategies that can be applied both at home and in school. Tuition is available in person or online, with regular feedback provided to parents throughout the programme.
